Dorothy Catalonia

History/Brief Bio

Dorothy lived with her father (most likely an only child) by herself during her early childhood. At sometime her father died leaving her a virtual orphan. Her grandfather took her in, "trained" her and formed her into what we see in the beginning of her time in the series. Treize Khushranada is her first cousin...or rather was, making Mariemaya her last remaining relative - her first cousin once removed.

Dorothy Catalonia is probably Spanish, despite her not looking very Hispanic at all. Catalonia is a province in Spain, known for it's interesting food (and it's own dialect), and Catalina is a Spanish name meaning "Catherine" cool, huh? (Just another odd tie into Trowa/Triton). In addition, most believe her first name is a shout out to the Frank Baum novel and MGM movie, "The Wizard of Oz."

What most people don't realize at first glance is Dorothy's entire life is very dynamic - changing from peaceful to war like, then becoming peace oriented with in a year and a half during the Eve Wars - i.e. Endless Waltz. (which CN cut her scenes out so most of the US doesn't realize she's changed so drastically in such a small amount of time. It's really pretty cool, and pretty showing the strength of the human spirit that she did)

Dorothy is misunderstood all the way up until the end, and it isn't until Libra and really until EW that we see the TRUE Dorothy Catalonia come out. It's really a pity. I think only a few people in the series and OVA really understood her. That being said, these people are: Treize, Relena - after a fashion, Quatre -a teeny, tiny bit, and Trowa probably more than the latter two.

Physical Appearance/Physical Manifestations

Dorothy has both fetching looks and physical draw backs. Hey, she's just like the rest of us 'normal' people. She has long, long white blonde hair. I believe the length was to also add to her status - in older times (which Romafellar is a hold over from) long, well kept hair was a sign of wealth. Dorothy also has ice/pale blue eyes. Real life, unlike this series, blue eyes are rarer than most - her shade being extremely uncommon. Her pale skin is also a hold over from older (Victorian) times when the paler you were, the more wealthy. More pale = less physical work, meaning that the person was wealthy enough they didn't have to work in the sun all day long. In addition to the physical manifestations of wealth, her mannerisms speak volumes about how she was brought up.

Always, her dress is expensive and semi-conservative. Even the 'daring' black thing she wore when Relena was queen STILL covered her arms fully and all of her chest up to her neck. (The fact that it is partially see-through is irrelevant, merely showing she isn't a prude. ;-) When she had tea, she purposefully turned her cup so she could sip properly. Most everything she does is calculated and ordered, not random and madness. Only when attached to the ZERO system (along with the knowledge of what Zech will do to the Earth and her cousin -- previously she believed it would all be settled over a duel) does she spiral out of control.

Emotions/Personality

Well, you only really see the glimpses of her feelings. Most the time you see her vengeful, cynical side. Sarcasm is her friend. But she is just as emotional (if not more) than may people. Her years of training made her shove her emotions down very far. The signs of these don't show until her short stint with White Fang. First, saving Treize, then anger with Quatre, and tears over the stabbing.

She is also very idealistic. She hates war, in reality. But she grew up on the Romafellar believe that there should be a war - war to wipe out all warfare. So... she was taught to love the idyllic nature of battle. Her father was taken by the war - probably her first memorable encounter with loss (nothing is known of her mother). Her psychotic grandfather raised her thereafter, making her a tool. As Trowa was a weapon, so was she. She was a spy as much of the others. Instead of using it for her own destruction, she used information as her weapon.
